I had the good fortune of being present at one of his shows at Yoshi’s in Oakland, California. At one point in the show he was beginning to take a tabla solo. While surveying the audience, he realized that tabla master Zakir Hussain was in attendance! He stopped abruptly and refused to play in the presence of the Ustad (master). He graciously invited Zakir on to the stage and the two proceeded to engage in an epic drum duo, with Trilok on drum set and Zakir on tabla. RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME! I wish it had been captured on video (it was before people had video capability on their phones). Here’s a great clip of Trilok playing with John McLaughlin Trio. He is a master of textures, dynamics and messing with time. Listen to what he does over this simple ostinato pattern that John and Kai Eckhardt set up.

I studied with him a long time ago. He would show up in military fatigues for the group lessons. He emphasized the importance of memorization and being able to move from one style of rhythm to another seamlessly.
