I have been teaching for over 25 years, offering instruction to people of all ages and abilities–beginners and professionals alike. I’ve taught at Naropa University, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and given lecture demonstrations at colleges and universities around the world.
I started playing music at the age of five and began working professionally from the time I left high school. While studying music theory and composition at The Evergreen State College, I apprenticed with Ghanaian master drummer Chata Addy and toured with his traditional and comtemporary ensembles. Although primarily self taught, I have studied formally with Zakir Hussain, Bill Douglas, Jerry Granelli and
Art Lande. Through my extensive experience performing/touring and recording in many styles–rock, swing, afro pop, klezmer, jazz/new music, electronica, Brazilian, Balkan, and many others–I am able to personalize each lesson to the individual student’s interests. I offer instruction on drum set, congas, bongos, tapan and frame drums.
Rates:
I have a sliding scale that allows people of varied economic means to be able to study drums with me. I also have patron rates that are encouraged for those who are inspired to contribute to supporting the arts.
